Do I legally have to pay rent to a roommate who kicked me out?

I never signed a lease, I rented the room from him for four months, but he drunkenly and rudely kicked me out twenty days into the month. He had not yet collected my rent money for that month, but is now threatening to sue me for the pro-rated amount of days I had lived there. This is in California.
