Should my son fight back.?

I know its a contentious question but should my son fight back against his partner. She has physically attacked him on several occasions. He has stated i don't see why i should stand there and take it. They have both marked each others faces, but still profess their love for each other. My wife and i have advised him to get out of this relationship for his own good.
